What is the Women, Faith, and Development Alliance (WFDA)?

The Women, Faith, and Development Alliance (WFDA) - a unique partnership of internationally focused faith, development, and women's organizations - is a powerful new force dedicated to engendering global efforts to reduce poverty by increasing political will and action to increase investments in women's and girls' empowerment around the world.

WFDA is focused on one 'big idea': to join women and men in international faith, development and women's organizations to mobilize around the bold moral imperative of ending global poverty and empowering women and girls.

WFDA targets key United States and international policy makers to raise the level of attention to gender and women in the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations, national campaigns on global poverty and international gatherings for ending global poverty. WFDA's success will be measured by policy change and new resources allocated for women's and girl's empowerment.

WFDA is not an organization: it is a campaign for social change growing from a groundswell acclaim that the time is NOW to eradicate global poverty, address gender inequality and invest in women and girls. The faith community has not previously engaged at this level with the women's and development communities to highlight women's empowerment. Through the combined international advocacy of faith communities, women's organizations and development organizations, WFDA will unleash those changes in attitudes, behaviors and policies of the magnitude required to cause the tipping point for gender equality.

WFDA launched its international action and advocacy campaign at Breakthrough: The Women, Faith and Development Summit to End Global Poverty in Washington, DC April 13-14, 2008, a highly visible gathering where world leaders, heads of denominations and faith groups, CEOs of development organizations and corporate leaders committed over $1.4 billion dollars to a global agenda of action and advocacy favorable to women and girls.

WFDA is co-founded by Washington National Cathedral's Center for Global Justice and Reconciliation, InterAction's Commission on the Advancement of Women, Religions for Peace and Women Thrive Worldwide. Partnership is open to organizations that support and align with the WFDA's principles as expressed in its Call to Partnership

We gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the more than 80 organizations from the faith, development, and women's sectors in the north and in the global south who contributed to shaping the Alliance and developing its advocacy and policy platform through their active participation in a series of meetings in 2006 and 2007. Since then membership has grown to include over 120 member organizations. Click here for a complete list of current members or click here to  join as an organization.
